スティーブン・スティグラー

スティーブン・マック・スティグラー（Stephen Mack Stigler、1941年8月10日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の統計学者であり、シカゴ大学統計学部のアーネスト・デウィット・バートン特別功労教授である。統計史に関する研究で知られる。

スティグラーは、スティグラーの法則でも知られている。これは、「科学的発見が第一発見者の名前に因んで名付られない」という法則である。

生涯

スティグラーは1941年にミネソタ州ミネアポリスで、経済学者のジョージ・スティグラーの子として生まれた。1967年にカリフォルニア大学バークレー校でPh.D.を取得した。彼の論文は順序統計量の線形関数に関するもので、指導教官はルシアン・ル・キャムだった。彼の研究は、ロバスト推定量の統計理論と統計史に焦点を当てている。彼はスティグラーの法則でも知られている。

ウィスコンシン大学マディソン校で教員となった後、1979年にシカゴ大学の教員となった。1994年には数理統計学会の会長となり、2006年にアメリカ哲学協会の会員に選出された。
